Feeling Empowered When You're Unemployed
“…not always the easiest course of action
when confronting difficulties.
If, however, we can remain focused
on keeping hope strong
and not succumbing to negative influences,
we will meet with success
in dealing with anything
life may throw in our path.”
Hiram Rogers Lloyd
Looking for work is a full time job which takes constant motivation to continue moving forward.
Some days are easy and others are like climbing Mt. Everest.
What is a person to do?
Let’s focus on the easy days and see what gems we can discover. During these days, keep a notepad by your side and write down the events which lifted your spirits. Examples: received a call from an old co-worker who was inquiring about how I was doing; the sun finally came out after three days of rain; went to a networking event and met some interesting people, etc…
The hardest part is feeling empowered on those days which feel dark and dreary. Your negative thoughts are ruling your emotions.
Your biggest goal is to re-light the hope within you and keep it burning. Easier said than done!
Let’s put our thinking caps on and brainstorm ideas to empower your creativity and motivation.
Ideas:
• List three strong points you had in your last job. Reminding yourself about these strengths will give you confidence.
• Re-read some of the letters of recommendations you have obtained and then get-up and take a bow. Thinking about how others value your skills will brighten your day.
• Register for a Support Group Meeting. When meeting with others it gives you support, ideas for finding a job and the realization you are not alone.
Please send ideas you have tried for empowering your day to the Love Yourself – It Matters Community. We will work together and increase our days of feeling empowered instead of desperate.
I am looking forward to hearing from you.
